Conferences

In addition to our guests, we gather information from conferences.  The Sierra Nevada Alliance has been of great assistance to MERG and Mariposa County in creating our General Plan Update and the Rural Alternative selected by the Board of Supervisors in December 2006.  This year their annual conference was on Climate Change and 5 of our board members attended.  We also had representation at the Sierra Nevada Conservancy meeting.  It is the recently created, state sponsored organization for preservation of the entire mountain range.  They now have an office in Mariposa and have been supportive in our attempts to have a water study.  Two of our members also attended the 2008 Planning and Conservation League conference on:  “State of Change:  How Californians can Change the World.”

Awards

MERG is especially proud to have been singled out by the Sierra Nevada Alliance this year.  In their annual ceremony, MERG won the top award for its outstanding contributions to the Mariposa General Plan update.  For many of us, this is recognition of work that has extended over ten years. While greatly honored, we know that there is much work we have yet to do.

MERG has been recognized by Caltrans for 15 years of Highway 49 cleanup.  Ironically our section of road extends to the 1988 proposed site of the Golden Bell     Cyanide Heap Leach mine, which was the cause for MERG being founded.  Happily, this very dangerous project did not proceed, but 20 years later MERG is still watch-dogging.

Sierra Nevada Alliance

MERG is also pleased to recognize our continuing relationship with the Sierra Nevada Alliance. The SNA has been protecting and restoring environment, wildlife and communities in the Sierra Nevada region since 1993.  MERG is one of more than 80 member SNA groups whose mission is to work to protect the Sierra for future generations.
